My favorite thing to think about after hearing today’s Gospel is that Jesus was asleep. While the Apostles are likely panicking, trying to bail out water, fearing for their lives in the storm, Jesus slept until they came to Him. Jesus might have seemed inaccessible to them at first, or maybe, like we all do sometimes, they forgot He was there and could save them if they only went to Him.

Today’s Gospel passage is one of the most relatable for me. I’ve struggled with anxiety most of my life and before learning how to manage it, my brain often felt like an uncontrollable storm. I remember all too well the feeling of my ship sinking. With all the concerning news and uncertainty surrounding us daily, I’m sure we all have moments when we feel the same way.

I often have to remind myself that Jesus speaks and the world obeys Him, and that each one of us is His greatest concern. When the world around us is overwhelming and we struggle to keep our heads above water, all we need to do is to go to Jesus, be honest about our fears and ask Him to speak peace over us.
