“God is home. We are in a far-off country. We are invited to walk each other home.”
Gregory Boyle, SJ, founder of Homeboy Industries

Spiritual directors walk directees home. They listen to each one’s sacred story to help them notice the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The true director is the Holy Spirit. Together, directors aid directees in discernment, prayer, and understanding as they seek to deepen their relationship with the Lord.

Spiritual Direction Guidelines

Focus

Spiritual direction is an interpersonal relationship in which one person assists another towards a deepening relationship with God. It is a way of claiming and clarifying our experience of God. The Holy Spirit is the true director. It does not take the place of psychological counseling or therapy. If you are receiving psychological counseling or therapy, it is recommended that you inform your counselor or therapist that you have a spiritual director.

Your Preparation

Spiritual direction assumes that you have an intentional prayer life, in whatever form that takes.

Confidentiality

The spiritual director will hold your conversations in strict confidence. Your time together is sacred. They may need to use material from your sessions for their own supervision, but your name will not be revealed, and the situation will be disguised. Please note that supervision focuses on the director, not the directee. Confidentiality is limited when there is a clear and imminent danger to you or the director, and if disclosure is required by law.

Relationship

The commitment as a spiritual director is to abide by the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct as described by the Spiritual Directors International at https://www.sdicompanions.org/docs/guidelines/Flip/guidelines_ethical_conduct.html and diocesan ethical standards for church ministers found at https://sdcatholic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Diocesan23.pdf .
