Today is the feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the French Visitation nun who brought us the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a young child in the 1640’s in France, Margaret spent many loving hours in front of the Blessed Sacrament. After suffering from rheumatic fever for four years, she miraculously recovered by pledging to the Blessed Mother to enter religious life, and she added the name “Mary” to her baptismal name.
By age seventeen, however, she had become wrapped up in the social scene of a young French debutante. One night at a party, she experienced an acute vision of the scourged Christ. He revealed His great love for her due to the vow she’d made to His Blessed Mother. Immediately, she resolved to fulfill her vow, and she entered the Visitation Convent at twenty-three years old.
Afterward, she experienced regular private revelations from Christ, receiving the practice of devotion to the Sacred Heart: Mass on first Fridays, Eucharistic Holy Hours on Thursdays, and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Two years later, she received a vision in which Christ laid her head over His Sacred Heart, revealing a taste of His tremendous love for her and all mankind. He asked her to bring to the world His tremendous love for each soul.
Today, this devotion to the Sacred Heart is one of the most popular among faithful Catholics. However, our familiarity with it may cause us to overlook its enormous beauty. You are loved by a God Who has taken the time to count every hair on your head. Of course He would know you; He knit you in your mother’s womb. This is a God of Creation Who sustains every facet of existence—not only yours, but that of every created thing: sun, stars, trees, flowers, birds.
He is not some impersonal force somewhere in the sky. He is omnipresent to you, intimately acquainted with every aspect of you. Here is a God Who has taken the time to know you and understand you, seeking you incessantly in hopes that you will reciprocate His love. Here is a God Who declared in His own words in today’s Gospel that you are worth more than many sparrows.
He sent His only Son to die for you, and revealed His loving Heart through St. Margaret Mary. You can be certain He won’t permit anything that doesn’t give you a chance to draw closer to His Sacred Heart. We do not slip through the cracks; the love of God would never permit that. Even in our lowest moments, He is present to us, inviting us deeper. Today, on the feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, remember the tremendous love of God that pursues you, moment by moment, and do not be afraid, because you are worth more than many sparrows.
