There is something great in our lives. Yes, our Lord and Savior. Sometimes, as humans, we struggle to grasp that Jesus is with us at all times. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if we just asked for a sign instead of invoking Him? “Are you there?” “What do you want me to do today?” “Please help me in this situation.” Or whatever your intentions might be?
Perhaps in our busy world, we try to find the quickest way so we can move on to the next moment, searching for clarity. The crowd in today’s readings had a specific purpose. They challenged Him for a sign and were skeptical.
Nowadays, technology gives us quick answers. AI is filling in the blanks in our minds. When you don’t know the answer, your first response is to get online and search for it—why not just Google it? Now ChatGPT will even create what you have in mind. It seems to me we are demanding an answer, a fix, and guidance by first asking technology. I must admit, I recently used ChatGPT. I was physically in charge of our church ministry fair. I was so busy, and I needed a poster quickly. I pulled up ChatGPT and entered what I wanted. Within three minutes, it created a beautiful poster with all the information needed. Yes, it was very nice, yet was it right that technology could solve my problem? Where is God in all this? Perhaps we have pushed Him aside in our daily trials and questions. Maybe we can even say we have put Him second to our day-to-day demands.
Humbly, I pray every day and try to make Jesus first in all I do. This world is challenging us to demand a sign, and our quick answer is technology. Let’s look to our youth today. Many are finding solace in returning to their faith. They feel the pull to replace faith with looking to their screens for quick answers but are recognizing that Jesus gave us the answer by going to a quiet place to pray.
The fifteen promises Mother Mary gave to St. Dominic regarding the rosary are known as “signal graces.” Have you ever had a time when, after prayer, an extraordinary event or gift from God served as an answer to prayer, or gave you a confirmation? These graces bring together seemingly unrelated events, like pieces of a puzzle, to provide spiritual comfort or guidance. I have had many of these in my life.
One Lent, I was struggling with many issues. I prayed for a sign, an answer that I was on the right track. My husband and I went to Wendy’s for a fish sandwich and fries. As I started eating my fries, WOW, the Lord answered me. I pulled out a fry, actually two, in the shape of a cross. That signal grace was just what I needed to know He was right there beside me.
Why waste your time searching for a sign, when God is only a breath away?
