In today’s Gospel Jesus reprimands the cities where He had worked the most miracles. He said on the last day it would be better for sinful towns that it would be for the places that saw so much of His divinity. It makes me consider why He chooses to give such wondrous signs to some people on earth, and not to others. I’ve known many people who leave the Church because “God never made himself real to me”, and I wonder if, in their own way, they have deeper faith than some who claim to know God deeply.

I can’t say God has ever done miraculous things in my life thus far that has undeniably proven His existence to me; I am just blessed enough to have faith in things I can’t see or prove. Hebrews 11:1 says “faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for and conviction about things we cannot see”. I think God knows who needs hope and conviction about unseen things because that’s what keeps us close to Him.

I’m the first to admit I’ve been guilty of praying in moments of trouble in my life and not praying much when things are going well. Many of my friends have expressed falling into the same pattern. Our humanity tends to forget we still need God when our life is going the way we want it to. If God answered every prayer request and we lived in comfort every day, how many of us would forget Him quickly? How many of us would pray out of obligation and not from the knowledge that we need God’s strength during hard times just as much as we need His joy in the good times?

The next time you feel frustrated that the prayer you’ve prayed for the millionth time has still gone unanswered, think about how you can change that prayer. Here is what prayer for healing in my family has turned into. I hope you find comfort in it as well.

Lord, maybe this healing I’ve been praying for will never be part of your plan. Instead I thank you for the virtues you’re teaching me through returning to you in prayer. Thank you for my conviction that you’re working on things I cannot see. Thank you for the faith you’ve placed in my heart and help me to nurture it every day. Lord, if the healing I ask for is still part of your plan I thank you ahead of time for it and for the hope I have that everything will work for the good of those who love you. Amen.
