“The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for.” (CCC 27)
Blessed Imelda Lambertini, patron saint of First Communicants, died of joy when receiving Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the first time. My soul yearns to encounter Jesus Christ in this same way – to reach a state of completion through pure fulfillment in the Lord and nothing else. As St. Augustine declared, “Our souls are restless until they rest in You”.
Our sole purpose on Earth should be to strive to find Christ in all we see and do. It is easier said than done, and day after day I fail to display the patience and gentleness that He has modeled for me. Yet Jesus Christ is infinite whereas all else is finite. Everything on Earth passes away. Materialistic possessions age. Even relationships with others will waver with time due to the human condition.
Is there any dogma more central to Catholicism than recognizing that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Holy Eucharist? Let us desire the Bread of Life above all else. I ask for strength to recognize the joy and unconditional happiness that Christ provides. He is the only one who can sustain me. He is the true Bread of Life. Through Him, the Bread of Heaven, we will encounter Eternal Life and happiness for all ages.
