When I was growing up, my siblings and I were not allowed to go Trick-or-Treating, no matter how much we begged. Instead, my parents organized All Saints Eve parties at church and had us dress up as angels or saints. We still got our candy and we had a lot of fun with games and prizes. Now that I am a mom, I do let my kids go out, but put my foot down when it comes to gory or evil-looking costumes. I love watching them scamper around my sister’s neighborhood with their cousins and filling up their plastic pumpkin buckets.

There is such a delicate balance between the human and the divine. Even though I let my kids go Trick-or-Treating with superhero costumes on, I also take them to the All Saints parties at church, dressed as saints. They play games that teach them about these holy men and women and see their fellow parishioners’ smiling faces as they fill them up with sugary treats. We are in the world, and permitted to partake in its pleasures (not to the point of sin) but not of the world, and asked to lift our minds and hearts to God.

Paul explains this balance perfectly in today’s first reading: “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the Devil… stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the Gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The world and the devil will throw as much as they can at us to tempt us to sin. We know that innocent fun can be twisted into evil by others with impure intentions. We know that enjoying candy can turn into gluttony. But we also know that God has given us Himself as our armor. What beautiful imagery! To think of truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, and the word of God as our loinguard, breastplate, shield, helmet and sword in this battle for salvation we call life! We are exposed to the enemy but we will not succumb to him as long as we stand firm in God’s love.

In the Gospel we hear just how strong that love of God is: “…how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…” Jesus longs for us, yearns for us. He wants to gather us to Himself and hold us close. Just as a mother hen spreads out her wings for her chicks when it starts to rain, He wants to be our shelter amid the storm.

Lord Jesus, guide me in this delicate balance of living with my feet on the ground and my eyes lifted heavenword. Help me to truly believe just how much you love me. Amen.
